Open Data in Operational Destination Management

Prof. Dr. Guido Sommer (University of Applied Sciences in Kempten)
Prof. Dr. Guido Sommer
University of Applied Sciences in Kempten
Adrian Greiner is a certified spatial and scenographic designer, Swiss Cycling Guide expert and, as CEO of BikePlan AG, runs a planning office which is primarily active in the fields of bike-specific destination development and spatial planning. As a project manager, he develops region-specific structures in order to establish mountain bike destinations and regions on a broad basis and to efficiently implement infrastructure projects at the planning level. BikePlan AG's project portfolio includes various regional and destination developments in well-known tourism regions of the Alpine region.
For the last two to three years the topic of open data in the tourism industry has been gaining traction. A number of interregional initiatives and projects have been created in respect of this, such as the DACH-KG, the BayernCloud or the work of the GNTB. The workshop will examine the significance of this development for destination management and discuss how DMOs’ roles are changing and what they can actually do now in order to be successful in the future against a backdrop of ever more open data.

The time for action has come. If you don‘t want to get lost in the jungle of websites, you have to seize the opportunities of digitization now. DMOs have to redefine their strategies. New technologies such as chatbots, AI & Co. are changing guest usage patterns and market development. Communication with guests is becoming more personal, more individual and, above all, more digital. The service for the guest is moving more and more into the foreground.

The Hiking Quality of Destinations

Liane Jordan (German Hiking Association )
Liane Jordan
German Hiking Association
Liane Jordan studied geography and tourism and is the leading coordinator for the quality initiatives “Wanderbares Deutschland” and the “Leading Quality Trails - Best of Europe” at the German Hiking Association. She is responsible for advising destinations and organizing seminars and certifications for quality trails and quality regions. Through her work in various projects in Germany and other parts of Europe, she gained many years of experience in the optimization of hiking destinations and the sharing of hiking knowledge.

Eric Magut (German Hiking Association)
Eric Magut
German Hiking Association
Eric Magut studied sports tourism at the German Sport University in Cologne. At the German Hiking Association he has been responsible for integrative path management, hiking destination development and networking in outdoor-focused regions since 2014. He supports tourism regions in various projects on their way to become a certified quality region “Wanderbares Deutschland” including the planning of signposting, trail structuring and development of a sustainable and functioning route and quality management.
The satisfaction of hikers depends to a large extent on the quality of the offer in a destination. The seminar will illustrate how the criteria of the quality region can be helpful and pioneering. In addition to a variety of high-quality routes and a broad spectrum of tailor-made services, the seminar will also deal with the issue of trail management and the discussion of current topics. Do we still need guidelines for visitor guidance in the future? How do we deal with possible conflicts between hikers, mountain bikers and forest owners in the service development? The Deutsche Wanderverband Service GmbH (the German Hiking Association Service GmbH) therefore cordially invites you to discuss these and other questions with us and to shed light on them from a professional perspective.

Knowing the guest better than he knows himself - from the inspiration and the planning phases through to the activity at the destination, the guest connects with the digital services and the content of a destination via so-called ‘touchpoints’. The information derived from the app, the web and at the location itself generate a digital guest profile that creates value for the destination. In this seminar you will gain an insight into what information about the guest becomes available and the potential it offers. There is also the chance to collectively discuss the specifics (which key figures are relevant and valuable in your view?)

Accessibility in tourism

Rolf Schrader (DSFT)
Rolf Schrader
DSFT
From 1993 to 2003, Rolf Schrader worked for today's Tourismus-Marketing GmbH Baden-Württemberg (TMBW) after his studies in Freiburg, where he last worked as marketing manager and deputy managing director with power of attorney. Since April 2004, Mr. Schrader has been a board member and managing director of the Deutsches Seminar für Tourismus (DSFT) Berlin e.V., the central training institution of the German tourism industry. Together with the Verein Tourismus für Alle in Deutschland (NatKo) e.V., the DSFT and Rolf Schrader developed a new nationwide labelling system with training courses, quality standards and terms for accessibility tourism in a project sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Economics. In the current follow-up project "Travel for Everyone", the system will be further developed and introduced throughout Germany. The aim is to make the accessibility data of the offers available to guests on many platforms as supplementary information.
Are you prepared for the target groups of the future? Against the background of demographic change, barrier-free tourism offers still offer many growth potentials and competitive advantages. But what does accessibility mean in concrete terms? What specific requirements do visually impaired or walking impaired people have in terms of equipment and service? In this seminar you will be familiarized with the topic "Accessibility" and the needs of different groups of guests. The special features of marketing and communication will be explained and discussed. In particular, the question will be answered: How digital are the guests now and in the future and what does this mean for the providers?

Hiking and cycling are popular – the industry is booming. In Germany, however, with a few exceptions, there is a lack of other outstanding offers such as extraordinary accommodations, innovative activities and insightful outdoor experiences – and where such experiences exist they are not interconnected. In the seminar some provocative theses will be set up, innovative best practices examples will be presented and interactively worked on, holistic and lasting concepts for the outdoor tourism will be provided. No boredom for sure!

Round table: visitor guidance for destinations, analogue and digital
How can you guide guests of a destination to avoid hotspots which do not only result in bad experiences for guests but also provoke the population to oppose? The daily tourism business encounters all kinds of conflicts with local stakeholders such as landowners, agriculture, forestry and conservation. For a sustainable and digital transformation, industry experts and agents need to debate, work together and network. The round table is moderated by Dr. Alexander Schuler (BTE). It is aimed at representatives of all relevant associations as well as significant partners of offers and organization for outdoor activities. Participation at the round table is by invitation only.
